Judge Smith was elected to the District Court in November 2019.  He is a graduate of Northeast Louisiana University and received his juris doctorate from Louisiana State University.  Prior to taking office, he maintained a private practice and worked for the Public Defender Board.  In 2003, he began serving as an assistant district attorney for Bossier and Webster Parishes, a position he held until his election in 2019.  He is a member of the Bossier, Shreveport and Louisiana Bar Associations and is a past president of the Webster Parish Bar Association.
