May I speak with the Judge about my case?
No. Judges are prohibited by the Code of Judicial Conduct from communicating with litigants about their pending case. All communications regarding pending criminal matters must be in the form of a written motion filed with the Clerk of Court with notice to the District Attorney, probation office, drug court office and other interested parties so that they may be given an opportunity to participate in a hearing. The matter will be set for hearing. All communication regarding a civil matter must be in the form of a written motion or request for hearing or conference filed with the Clerk of Court with notice to all other parties. The matter will be set for conference or hearing.
I don't want to hire a lawyer. May I speak with the staff attorney or law clerk?
Staff attorneys and law clerks work for the judges, and like the judges are prohibited from talking to litigants about their pending cases. Furthermore, they may not give legal advice.
