Overview
The 26th JDC Drug Court is a special court that handles cases involving persons 17 years of age or older who potentially have a moderate to severe substance abuse or substance addiction problem. The Drug Court involves long-term, intensive and positive reinforcement approach to the treatment of the substance abuser. The Program emphasizes (1) comprehensive legal and clinical assessments; (2) a comprehensive continuum of substance abuse treatment methods; (3) participant accountability through frequent court reviews, frequent random drug testing and graduated constructive sanctions and incentives; and (4) continuing, external evaluation of program efficacy and long-term participant outcomes.
Drug Court is a voluntary intensive treatment program which requires a total commitment from every participant. Upon successful completion of the program, the participant is eligible to apply to have the conviction expunged from their record in accordance with La. R.S. 13:5304.
Program Criteria
Eligible clients include both males and females whose histories and arrest record indicate problems related to substance abuse such as possession of a small amount of drugs or paraphernalia; charges related to drug use; and/or history of chemical dependence and addiction. If the defendant has any prior felony convictions for any offenses defined as crimes of violence in R.S. 5304 12:2(B), including domestic violence, discretion is used on a case-by-case basis as to admission into the program. Sex offenders are not eligible.
Participants are required to work at least 32 hours per week, or be enrolled in full time school. Each participant must attend a minimum of two AA/NA or self-help meetings per week in addition to all required individual and group sessions for treatment.
